Ensuring the safety of medical interventions in vulnerable groups is critical. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has further highlighted the exclusion of children and pregnant women from the majority of clinical trials. Understanding the safety of vaccination in these groups is key to ensuring optimum patient care and building trust in healthcare systems.

The ongoing efforts of this working group aim to generate discussion and address the challenges facing pharmacovigilance in low-resource settings, in particular relation to COVID-19 vaccination in children and pregnancy. Over 250 researchers, regulators, healthcare workers and industry professionals from across the globe have come together in this group to share ideas, form collaborations, and develop and disseminate materials and resources that others can use for free.

Background

Following Global Pharmacovigilance's consensus-building research on the priorities for pharmacovigilance in LMICs during the COVID-19 pandemic, 2 working groups formed to explore issues surrounding:

  • The Safety of COVID-19 Vaccination in Pregnancy in LMICs

  • The Safety of COVID-19 Vaccination in Children/Adolescents in LMICs

Virtual meetings of these two working groups began in Apr 2022. As a result of similar outputs from each of these group's intial discussions, and a large overlap in group membership, in June 2022 it was agreed to merge these two groups to focus and strenghten ongoing activities. As a result, the Safety of COVID-19 Vaccination in Children and Pregnancy in LMICs Working Group held its first meeting on 29th June 2022.
